Sometimes when you’re in pain, all you want to do is sleep it off. But what happens when your toothache keeps you awake? Don’t toss and turn trying to get some well-deserved shuteye. Try these tips to help you get the rest you need despite the discomfort!

Sleep With Your Head Elevated

Though you likely want to lie down and drift off to a peaceful slumber, laying completely flat can make this difficult. Unfortunately, though it may normally bring you comfort, when you’re completely reclined, your blood can rush to your head, intensifying the pain in your tooth. To remedy this, try sleeping with your head elevated by stacking a few pillows under your head, or by sleeping on a reclining chair or bed.

Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever

Over the counter (OTC) pain relievers can help take away some of the pain your tooth may be feeling but remember it’s only a temporary fix. Even if it is successful at making all your pain go away, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible to treat not just the pain but the source of it, too.

Watch What You Eat

If you are experiencing tooth pain, be careful about the foods you consume. Avoid anything that is very cold, acidic, sweet, or hard, especially right before bed, as this can make the pain worse. Also, try to avoid chewing on the side of the mouth that is in pain.

Use Mouthwash

Mouthwashes that contain alcohol aren’t recommended for daily use, but during a toothache they can keep your mouth clean and act as a numbing agent in the process. Just swish a little around before you head to bed for best results.

Remember, if your toothache has lasted longer than 24 hours, it’s time to call your emergency dentist. In the meantime, try these tips to help you get a better night’s sleep until your appointment.
